The
Forest Conservancy (TFC) is a non-profit,
non-government organization that was established by two
of Jamaica’s leading forestry authorities, Mr.
Guy Symes and Keats Hall, both former Commissioners
of Forestry. TFC is dedicated to promoting the
sustainable use of Jamaica’s forest resources. It
was incorporated in October 2003 and is managed by a
ten member Board.
The National Forest Management and
Conservation Plan (NFMCP) has identified 69,244
hectares as having the highest potential for
reforestation, while the Land-use Branch, NEPA has
listed some 60,000 hectares of agricultural land as
being idle or underutilized. In light of the
critical need to mitigate adverse deforestation
trends, the Forest Conservancy works with both large
and small private properties including owners of
idle or underutilized agricultural lands to
encourage development of potential reforestation
initiatives based on Teak and other elite hardwood
timbers. Targeting the owners of these holdings with
technical guidance and support will:
(a) help reduce the impact of forest
depletion, land degradation and improper land-use,
and
(b) rehabilitate and manage the
nation’s dwindling forest resource in a sustainable
manner.
In order to succeed with our mission,
TFC has invited farmers, landowners, community
leaders and corporate entities to express their
interest in our objectives or make enquiries as to
how they may contribute towards realization of TFC’s
goals.
